Denver is unique in Colorado in that the city, county, and the school district have the same geographical boundaries. Denver Public Schools was established as a school district in 1902. The district includes 141 facilities and sites valued at more than $600 million. These facilities, located on 1,660 acres of land, total 11 million square feet of floor space. The student population in Fall 2002 was 71,972.
