Altitude offers an entirely new set of challenges for engine makers and
racing teams. Lack of oxygen and pressure at high altitudes makes combustion
slower and less powerful. This saps precious speed and horsepower from
cars and engines of racing teams accustomed to operation at sea-level.
Serious adjustments are necessary to configure cars for optimum performance
in the atmospheric conditions at this altitude.
Given
the challenge altitude presents, it is only natural that almost all the
major racing circuits have an annual event in Colorado. Lucky for us all
the tracks are located within a couple hours of Denver. The state offers
the following venues for competition: Colorado National Speedway, Bandimere
Speedway, Pikes Peak International Raceway, and the world renowned Pikes
Peak Hill Climb course, as well as some smaller tracks for enthusiasts.
There are some events that make their own venue. For instance, the Denver
Grand Prix turns downtown into a whole different challenge for publc officials.
Formula One cars zoom around downtown Denver in excess of 150 miles an
hour and neglect to stop at red lights. Pikes Peak or Bust has redefined
its meaning as well. Rally style cars roar up one of the most famous mountains
in the world at speeds in excess of 100 miles an hour for the Pikes Peak
or Bust Hill Climb.
