Colorado Professional & College Sports
With every major league and professional sport being represented in Colorado,
it truly is a sportsman's paradise. Colorado fans are very supportive
of their teams and support them nationally.
The
oldest of the bunch, the Denver Broncos NFL football team, won back-to-back
superbowls in the 1990's after 3 dissappointing appearances during the
70's and 80's. The Broncos old home, the infamous 'Mile High Stadium,'
was recently retired after several decades of service in favor of the
new stadium, Invesco Field at Mile High. This is truly a first-class arena
and is pictured to the right, above. Club seating, luxurious boxes, and
new equipment for the press are just a few of the amenities. The team
didn't move very far, since the stadium was built in the parking lot of
the old Mile High Stadium.
The NHL's Colorado Avalanche, formerly the Quebec Nordiques, capitalized
on their inaugural season in Colorado and produced a Stanley Cup in 1996.
Their good fortune has continued as they have won 6 consecutive division
titles up to and including the 2001 season. The 2001 season culminated
in another Stanley Cup for the Avalanche against the New Jersey Devils
in an exciting 7 game series. The Avalanche started playing at McNichols
Arena, once the home of the Denver Nuggets. This lasted for two years
until the completion of the Pepsi Center, located in lower downtown.
The Denver Nuggets, a decendent of the ABA, is one of only a handful of
teams that made it into the Natoinal Basketball Association. Most of the
ABA teams simply folded up. The Nuggets have been playing in Colorado
for roughly 30 years. The Nuggets now find themselves at home in the new
Pepsi Center and are looking to find national prominence once again.
Major
League Baseball also finds a home here in Colorado. The expansion of the
National League included the Florida Marlins and the Colorado Rockies
in 1992. The following year the Rockies began to play at the old Mile
High Stadium. The expansion team has enjoyed mild success including a
leadoff homerun for the inaugural game, and several league attendance
records. Two years later, in 1995, their new home was completed and they
moved out of Mile High. Coors Field, the new home of the Colorado Rockies
seats 50,100 with box seats, a club level, and many other amenities including
an on site brewery. The ballpark cost $215 million and is truly a beautiful
place.
